Swimming with the turtles at Gili Air
Part 3 of a 3 part blog series
Back on the boat, we went to Gili Air to catch a glimpse of more turtles up close. After some time in the water feeding more fish and searching for turtles I got out and then I heard a scream!! Turtle, turtle, I quickly jumped back in the water without my flippers and swam to Greg, we got so close we could touch it and swim along with it, amazing experience sorry no pictures as it happened so fast.
Gili Air is the middle of the other two Gilis. It does have bars and restaurants plus diving schools just not the raging parties, more of a relaxed vibe with chill-out music and yoga style culture.
Gilis Air is where you can see Lombok mountainside from the eastern side and only a very short boat ride to the mainland.
Air has a bit more accommodation than Mono but more for the budget travellers, though it does look like more development is coming.
What a day, three islands, boat ride, views, blue turquoise water, white sandy beaches, hundreds of fish, turtles, lunch on the beach and cold beers watching the world go by, what a day. We headed back to the hotel for a refreshing shower and just in time for the cocktail happy hour and sunset, bliss!!
If you are thinking about going to the Gilies Islands for a day trip we highly recommend it.
What you need to take on the boat for your day trip:
- Togs, Towel
- Sunglasses, hat
- Jandals or some kind of summer footwear that you don’t mind getting wet
- Water – at each island you can buy more, just need it for the boat
- Snacks – in case you get hungry
- Camera – underwater one if you can
- Sealegs – for those who are not good on boats ;)
Until our next journey, talk soon Charlotte and Greg.
